The homeworkdoer review is probably one of the most common and mysterious genres I have ever encountered in literature. When I was in school, I was told that it was a “free flow of thought,” that anyone could write an essay. And that was it. It seemed that from then on I could write whatever and/or however I wanted, without obeying any laws. I made up what I liked best, chaotically expressed my thoughts, and was quite content. It created a firm conviction that I knew how to write an essay. Later, in college, they started asking me to write essays again. It was already in psychology. After explanations, it became clear that I had to find information and just rewrite it (or retype it). Only several years later I could open for myself some of the mysteries of this not frivolous genre and understand what kind of laws it is subject to, what are the peculiarities of the essay genre…
And it all started with Michel de Montaigne, who in his time wrote a book called “Essays”. If you open it, you see a set of philosophical essays, where the author reflects on topical things. For example, he has chapters “On Conscience” or “On Egoism”. At the same time, there is no clear structure, and it was impossible to attribute what was written to any previously known genre. This is how a new literary term emerged in the Renaissance, which would mean “sample, essay”. True, this is if it is translated from French. Latin, on the other hand, would give us another translation: “weighing. When one penetrates the genre of essays, all these primary sources become logical and understandable. The differences between essays and any other genre are quite obvious, but let us briefly outline them.
