There are three important dates on a 686-3 (many-years-old now):
The date on the manual, the date on the barrel and the date on the trigger group.
The manufacture date on the magazine well is the same as the trigger group date, so the same as the barrel date. The date is stamped on the base of the frame itself, but that stamp is nearly impossible to see.
The manufacture date on the grips is stamped on the underside of the grip panels, about 3/4 of the way back.
The trigger group date is the most important of the three. It’s stamped on the underside of the guard. You can’t see it if the guard is open, but it’s clear if the guard is closed. The guard has a screw hole in it, so you can pop the guard off if you’re in a hurry.
The barrel date is stamped on the barrel, and can be seen if the barrel is uncapped. You can see the trigger group date on the barrel if you hold it sideways.
If you’re only interested in the 4” barrel, you can look at that, since the barrel date is the most important.
If you’re interested in the full length, you’ll need to date the whole trigger group.

According to the S&W site this particular gun is a full-length or “S&W Lifetime”, meaning the trigger group has been modified several times, including the original factory S&W trigger.
Modifying the trigger group is a relatively simple process:

Remove the old, worn trigger assembly

This is actually one of the easier things to do to a 686. When you open the action, you can see the original parts in the magazine well area. If the original trigger is still in there, take it out and compare it to the new trigger (in the same condition, if you don’t have a trigger for comparison, you can get a new one from S&W or a gunsmith).
