Smith And Wesson 686-3 Serial Numbers

Smith Wesson was founded by Samuel Colt, who is credited with being the first to produce a mass-produced, repeating handgun.
By the early 20th century, S&W had developed a reputation for making high quality guns, although they were not associated with the single action revolver genre until the introduction of the Model 686. .
Jan 24, 2117 SA, how can I list the serial number of the 686-3 or any other 686 model with the serial number? A quick look at the answer says “6”
Apr 23, 2046 5981- The number “8970” is on the left hand side of the cylinder and on the barrel. There is no model or serial number. It is marked “S&W” and “Chicago”. I have checked the serial number on the serial number plate on the right hand side of the barrel. It is “1323”. How can I get to the actual serial number?
Oct 6, 2011 Second 686 serial number, what happened to the first serial number?
The serial number of the 686-3 is 686-3391. It was manufactured in 1991. I do not know why it has the “-3″ on the end, since only the first two numbers of a 686-3 serial number are required. You may be thinking of the serial number of the 686-4. It is 686-3925. It is manufactured in 1996. .
Oct 4, 2014 Hi, can you please tell me the year of manufacture, the day of manufacture or a model number of the 686-4. I have not found anything with a 686-4 serial number on the internet. The serial number I have is 7096-0593. This is the only gun that I have found with a 686-4 serial number. There is an asterisk (*) next to the numbers so the numbers are not in normal order. It is a.
Oct 10, 2015 Is it possible to list the serial number of a revolver in 686-3 format? The serial number of the 686-3 is 100408, which is 06408. The serial number is on the bottom right hand side of the cylinder and is made of silver plated steel with a cap. .
I have tried: the serial number is on the cylinder with a silver cast silver color cap and the last 4 number of the serial number is 686 which is only the last 4 numbers

There are three important dates on a 686-3 (many-years-old now):
The date on the manual, the date on the barrel and the date on the trigger group.
The manufacture date on the magazine well is the same as the trigger group date, so the same as the barrel date. The date is stamped on the base of the frame itself, but that stamp is nearly impossible to see.
The manufacture date on the grips is stamped on the underside of the grip panels, about 3/4 of the way back.
The trigger group date is the most important of the three. It’s stamped on the underside of the guard. You can’t see it if the guard is open, but it’s clear if the guard is closed. The guard has a screw hole in it, so you can pop the guard off if you’re in a hurry.
The barrel date is stamped on the barrel, and can be seen if the barrel is uncapped. You can see the trigger group date on the barrel if you hold it sideways.
If you’re only interested in the 4” barrel, you can look at that, since the barrel date is the most important.
If you’re interested in the full length, you’ll need to date the whole trigger group.

According to the S&W site this particular gun is a full-length or “S&W Lifetime”, meaning the trigger group has been modified several times, including the original factory S&W trigger.
Modifying the trigger group is a relatively simple process:

Remove the magazine
Remove the old, worn trigger assembly
Add a new replacement
Reassemble

If you own a 686 and you are looking to get to the origin of this one, I would start by going through the following steps in order:

Remove the magazine
Remove the old trigger
Add a new replacement
Reassemble

This is actually one of the easier things to do to a 686. When you open the action, you can see the original parts in the magazine well area. If the original trigger is still in there, take it out and compare it to the new trigger (in the same condition, if you don’t have a trigger for comparison, you can get a new one from S&W or a gunsmith).
