What is Borstar® Technology?

Borstar® is Borealis’ state-of-the-art multimodal patented technology for the production of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Combined with Borealis’ unique catalytic technology, Borstar supports the production of a wide range of advanced polyethylene and polypropylene products for the most demanding applications through molecular design. The Borstar process offers a simultaneous improvement in conversion economics and key environmental aspects such as energy efficiency and raw material recycling.

Borealis provides further development of Borstar and market the next generation of Borstar as Borstar PE 3G. The new developments represent a leap forward in process technology, enabling the development of flexible polymers from bimodal to multimodal PE/PP resins and facilitating the development of an ever-expanding range of new plastics that outperform alternative materials to meet manufacturers’ needs. and end-users.

Global growth driven by Borstar’s polyethylene and polypropylene capacity and capacity expansion is a key element of Borealis’ strategy. Significant growth projects include Borouge, a joint venture with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in the United Arab Emirates, and Bayport Polymers LLC (Baystar™), a 50/50 joint venture owned by TotalEnergies and Borealis in North America. Following the successful commissioning of the Borouge 3 project in 2016, the Ruwais site is now the largest integrated polyolefin production facility in the world, with a production capacity of 4.5 million tonnes and growth on the horizon. Baystar includes a 625,000 MTPA Borstar polyethylene plant at its Pasadena, Texas site and a 1 million MTPA steam cracker in Port Arthur, Texas. The new cracker processes ethane and will supply feedstock to the existing 400,000 tpa polyethylene plant, as well as the new plant in Pasadena.

Borstar® Scope
The cornerstone of Borstar technology is to offer innovative products with an efficient and flexible design. Borstar’s key components are proprietary multimodal polyolefin technology and proprietary catalyst systems.

Borstar’s multimodal polymerization process enables custom polymeric materials for demanding applications by:

broad polymer design freedom (e.g., molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, comonomer distribution, and crystal morphology)
the large window of product properties and feature combinations (e.g. high strength and processability, stiffness and impact resistance, transparency and toughness)
high and stable quality; backed by proprietary Advanced Process Control (BorAPC)
This allows you to create more complex, customer-oriented solutions with a unique combination of features.

Why Borstar®?
Borstar delivers what its customers need: consistently superior real estate products that can be turned into sustainable value applications. The Borstar process produces innovative polymers with good mechanical properties and good processability for a wide range of products (e.g. automotive, pipes, packaging, etc.) at a competitive price and with greater environmental sustainability (e.g. downsizing).

Depending on the application, Borstar materials offer a number of special properties and structural advantages, which are achieved by adapting the molecular structure of the resin in both the Borstar PE process and the Borstar PP process. These include:

toughness and high environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR)
long-term creep/burst strength
An exceptionally high balance of stiffness and impact resistance is combined with additional features such as surface aesthetics and dimensional stability.
